LVEC Mission Metrics

Measuring certain key indicators of our mission can give us a much better understanding of how we are doing in our mission.  Right now, this page mostly lists the indicators, and we do not yet have most of the results. Please check back as we have just begun the process of measuring and reporting on these metrics and will be filling out more of the results in the page below.  We would love to have help in this process and if you or someone you know might be a good match for being an on or off-site intern in helping us quantify these metrics, please let us know at intern(at)lostvalley.org

Sustainability:

To develop metrics for sustainability, we must attempt the difficult task of defining sustainability.  Sustainability can be defined as the ability of something to be continued into the indefinite future.  We can also break sustainability into ecological, economic, and social aspects.  It is very important that we distinguish between the concepts of sustainability and self-sufficiency.  While these two concepts have some overlaps, they are fundamental distinct and do not always go together.  We strive to be self sufficient in ways that also increase our sustainability, but realize that sustainabilty is also about inter-relationships, and depending on the context, on site self sufficiency may or may not be the more sustainable route.  See this article for more on that subject.

A good starting place for metrics is a table from the Union of Concerned Scientists:
