I came here as a student in hopes of finding change.  I found it. The community is driven by compassion and is dedicated to making a positive difference in our world by thinking globally and acting locally.

Lost Valley is open to interviewing people interested in camping in community for a number of months during the sunny season.  We call this a site-lease option.  The cabins and other houses are currently inhabited, but the community is open to inviting those who may want to provide their own housing as a site-leaser at Lost Valley. This is a chance to pay a very affordable rent to provide your own temporary housing to stay at Lost Valley where there are great things happening all the time.  You must interview with the community, no pets.  There is an application process for site-leasers, same as other renters, described on this website under “Housing.”

There is no guarantee of housing space opening up when the rainy season comes, but one can move to a dormitory room for the winter if so desired.

Huge RV’s are not the simplest to accommodate, but there may be availability; Check-in with “housing(at)lostvalley.org” if an RV is your desired temporary home.

Lost Valley is seeking a person to assist the Event Director with general office work and other events center related activities including simple research and managing smaller projects.  We are currently in the midst of starting new programs and making site improvements; so there is much to do! The assistant will also have the opportunity to participate in event set-up and event management.

This role is flexible insofar as we can match your skill set to a variety of events department needs. Our Event Director is moving on in mid-October, and if things go well this summer, the assistant will be a prime candidate for a  salaried position in the autumn.

Assistant must be willing to live on-site at Lost Valley.

Starting Date: June 3, 2013

Compensation: This role will begin as a “part-time volunteer” role, requiring 15 hours per week in the events department. Part-time volunteers living on-site are eligible for rental discounts and expense reimbursements. If you choose to participate in event management, there is the opportunity to earn wages on an event-by-event basis.

Skills that could be helpful:

Simple project management experience

Detail-Oriented

Willingness to play a support role in the office

Interest/experience in managing set-up for events

Can maintain calm and effective communication in stressful situations

Familiarity with wordpress and html

Southern Willamette Valley

August 16 – 25, 2013

The Permaculture Passport Program is a new course offering that goes beyond a PDC at a single institution, as is the norm. It is a collaborative regional permaculture sample program lasting 9 days, during which a student experiences a number of different sites and people implementing permaculture principles in different ways within 40 minutes of Eugene. It will consist of 3 days each at Lost Valley, Dharmalaya, and Aprovecho. (There will also be a visit to other notable neighborhood sites in Eugene.)  Students will receive significant permaculture instruction and hands-on activities based around the strong suits of the host sites. For Lost Valley, this is group bonding at the start of the course, intentional community living, and sociocracy. Dharmalaya will focus on personal development, urban permaculture, and neighborhood transformation. Aprovecho will focus on appropriate technology, sustainable forestry, and natural building. Gardening is a part of all three host sites. Further information about the other two is listed below. If you have questions, contact programs@lostvalley.org, or the other two host sites. Course schedule:

Site One – Lost Valley, August 16-19 (Fri. to Mon.)  – focusing on open of course & group building, social/community permaculture, organization/governance, and gardening

Site Two – Dharmalaya, August 19-22 (Mon. to Th.) – focusing on urban permaculture, neighborhood renewal, inner permacture (yoga, meditation), and gardening

Site Three: – Aprovecho, August 22-25 (Th. to Sun.) – focusing on appropriate technology, sustainable forestry, natural building, and gardening – will include a final evening (the 24th) of reflection and celebration, with the hosts from all three sites.

Dharmalaya promotes dharma holistically in personal, ecological, and social spheres of life. Dharma is the perennial path that brings balance, harmony, and inner fulfillment. The centerfeatures a comprehensive program of personal development through yoga, meditation and service, with an integrated approach to personal development. Dharmalaya is also at the heart of an emerging urban ecovillage in its Eugene neighborhood that demonstrates living with low impact on the earth. Finally, Dharmalaya’s social vision gives importance to decentralized economics, cooperative enterprise, equity, development of human potentials, ecological protection, bioregionalism, and spiritual humanist values.

Aprovecho is a 40-acre permaculture and sustainable living education and demonstration center located outside of Cottage Grove. For 30 years, the staff, residents, volunteers, and students of Aprovecho have collaborated to create a thriving educational community showcasing rainwater catchment, natural building, fuel-efficient cookstoves, aquaponics, ponds, orchards, organic gardens, solar hot water, sustainable forest management, and more. We are excited to offer the opportunity to experience Aprovecho to students in the Permaculture Passport Program, and look forward to meeting you this summer!

Students are highly encouraged to bring camping gear, as the lodging available at all three sites is primarily camping.

Students are responsible for their own transport between sites.  This is for liability reasons.  Arrangements will be made during the course for this – it typically is not a problem.  For students without a vehicle, organizers will help organize arrival before the course and departure after it.

The course begins at 3 PM on August 16.  Students are expected to arrive that day (but can come the night before at extra cost).

Work-trade is available in limited quantities.  Please apply by filling out the application on this site or by submitting a request stating your expertise, reason for reduced price, plan for use of the experience after the course, and ability to arrive early to do the work.  Each of the three host sites will decide about work-trade independently.

Job Description:
Work with the Marketing Manager and Marketing Team to do the following:

Manage our Website
Create company aesthetics (graphics, logos, letterhead)
Research and understand our market demographics.
Attract students, guests, and visitors to our Programs, Events, and Rental units by:

- working with departmental Stewards

- managing social media

- creating and distributing flyers and posters

- helping with event tabling

- posting ads in newspapers

- developing innovative marketing techniques

- and other necessary tasks

This is a volunteer position.  However, at the convenience of the organization, we offer place to stay and food in our community.

The 2012 LVEC PDC was a resounding success!  Two weeks, 14 intrepid students, and a whole lot of sustainable learnin’.  Let’s stack those functions again next year – same time, same place.
