WHY STUDY PERMACULTURE OR ECOVILLAGE DESIGN
Whether your interests in the environment are professional or personal taking a certified course in Permaculture and/Ecovillage design can have many benefits.
For Professional Reasons: The professional world is beginning to learn the value of sustainability. There is a growing demand for professionals versed in ecological thinking from many employment sectors, from designers, to managers, to educators, to developers, to anything in between. A Permcaulture Design Certificate communicates to a perspective employer that you have learned how to integrate ecological thinking into practical considerations, and that you are well versed in the understanding of how human interaction can integrate into the natural world. The lessons in these courses can inform any number of professional endeavors.
For Personal Reasons: As environmental awareness grows many more people are becoming concerned about how they impact the world, and endeavor to learn how they can live with less impact on the planet. By studying permaculture or ecovillage design you will be educated in how to make truly informed decisions about your life on this planet. By understanding design you will come to understand how human aspirations can be wed to nature's systems. This understanding can help you to be an informed and empowered consumer in today's market, as well as help you to develop your own independent habits and lifestyle choices that empower you to live sustainably.
THE CAMASSIA DIFFERENCE
The Camassia Institute courses are designed for those with an academic, professional or personal interest in sustainable living and design
Traditional Permaculture Design Courses are two weeks long, the Camassia Permaculture Design Courses are a total of five weeks long, including the one week Seminar and the four weeks of Permaculture study. The extra time in our certified programs allows for a more in depth study, greater time to work on your design project, more varied topics such as eco-forestry, and time for greater involvement in hands on projects and community activities.
By hosting our programs at Lost Valley you learn permaculture while living in an aspiring ecovillage, experiencing on a day to day basis the connection between community and the land in a real way. The campus is your textbook, the outdoors your classroom, and being a part of a community your homework. The Camassia Institute also places a great emphasis on the role of community in living in a sustainable way. Concepts in community living and interaction are embedded in all of our courses, we even teach the special Ecovillage Design Education curriculum for those specifically interested in the creation of intentional community.
Because we realize that you have unique interests and life circumstances, we offer:
- Three main tracks: EcoBuilding (an intro to creating ‘eco’ structures, and appropriate technology), Permaculture Design (learning how to create and present holistic permaculture design) and Ecovillage Design Education (for those interested in organizing their local community or starting their own intentional community).
- Sustainability Seminar: This 'crash course' in sustainability will give you an overview of green building, permaculture, and ecovillage design through a combination of lectures and hands-on projects.
- Seasonal Immersion Program which integrates all three tracks into one (for those interested in learning comprehensive eco-village design concepts).
- Week-long, and month-long programs, for scheduling and financial flexibility.
